Golf Posture: 3 Exercises to Improve Your Position in the Golf Swing

Golf Posture: 3 Exercises to Improve Your Position in the Golf Swing

Why Proper Golf Posture Matters

Good golf posture is an absolute essential part of the swing, and for some reason nobody talks about it.ย  Your ability to maintain your posture can be influenced by past lifestyle habits and can only be improved with the right golf fitness routine.ย

If you struggle to maintain your posture throughout the golf swing, these three exercises can help improve the physical qualities needed to move more efficiently.

3 Exercises to Improve Your Golf Posture

1. Thoracic Rotations

Thoracic rotations help improve mobility through the upper spine, which can make it easier to rotate without losing posture.ย ย

This exercise is especially useful for golfers who feel restricted during the backswing or have difficulty creating upper-body rotation.

Focus on moving through your thoracic spine while keeping the rest of your body completely still.ย

Sets & reps: 3 sets of 12 reps per side.

2. Prone Shoulder Raises

Prone shoulder raises are a strengthening exercise that targets the muscles responsible for pulling the shoulders into a stronger position.

This is especially useful for golfers who spend hours sitting at a desk and tend to develop rounded shoulders over time. Strengthening the upper back can help counter that posture and create a better starting position at address.

Keep the movement slow and controlled and avoid shrugging your shoulders toward your ears.

Sets & reps: 3 sets of 12 reps per side.

3. Thoracic Extensionsย

Thoracic extensions are another essential exercise for golfers who spend a lot of time sitting and develop rounded shoulders.

This exercise helps restore range of motion through the upper spine and open up the front of the body, making it easier to maintain your posture during the backswing.

Focus on keeping your feet pressed firmly against the wall. This helps prevent you from cheating the movement and keeps the emphasis on your thoracic spine.

Sets & reps: 3 sets of 15 reps.

Fixing Your Posture for Good

Fixing your golf posture takes more than simply reminding yourself to โ€œstand tallerโ€ or โ€œstay in posture.โ€ If your body has spent years adapting to sitting at a desk, limited thoracic mobility and weakness through the upper back will make keeping posture impossible.

Thatโ€™s why I like combining mobility exercises such as thoracic rotations and extensions with strengthening exercises like prone shoulder raises. Youโ€™re working on both your ability to get into a better position and your ability to control that position.

Consistency is the most important part. Adding exercises like these into your routine a few times per week can gradually improve how your upper body moves and give you a better physical foundation for your golf swing.

What This Can Look Like with a Golfer

A majority of the golfers I work with come to me with less-than-ideal posture. For some, itโ€™s a more pronounced rounded-shoulder posture that has developed over years of sitting and working at a desk. For others, it may only be a slight restriction or tendency to round forward.

The strategy for improving either is very similar: consistently strengthen the muscles that support better posture while gradually restoring range of motion through the shoulders and upper spine.

With a consistent routine, Iโ€™ve seen golfers at both ends of that spectrum make significant improvements over time. The goal isnโ€™t to force yourself into โ€œperfect posture.โ€ Itโ€™s to give your body the strength and mobility to naturally get into and maintain better positions, both in everyday life and throughout your golf swing.

Build a Better Golf Fitness Routine

These three exercises are a great place to start, but posture is only one piece of how your body affects your golf swing. A complete golf fitness program should also address mobility, strength, rotation, and power based on your individual limitations and goals.
